Bret Deveraux's Spartan School essay is a really useful lens to think about Practitioner indoctrination with. Sometimes I've seen fans asking about why Practitioner kids don't just break out of the situations they're in and fight back if conditions are so bad. Fear of the consequences of rebellion are one part of it. This is the other part of it, that they are made complicit in victimizing others in a way that leaves them emotionally clinging to the system to justify what they did.
Spoilers Pale 24.aIn 24.a, we see another case of a transgressive act, where Teddy convinces Donny to kill his dad, and then later rejects his parents' offer to defect from the Carmine Exile, in large part because he can't face the shame of what he has done. Really says something about Charles that he's recreating the same system he says he's trying to break.
